Galileo Galilei was born on February 15, 1564 in Pisa, Italy, and is one of the most famous scientists. He is a well-known Italian physicist, mathematician, and astronomer throughout the world. He is most commonly known for his discoveries of Jupiter’s four largest moons, the phases of Venus and the Moon, the sunspots, and the law of falling bodies. His overall fame came from his trial in Rome about disagreeing with the church by saying that the Earth is not at the center of the solar system, but the Sun is. All the observations that he has made throughout his lifetime has influenced and contributed to the science that we now learn and use. Even though Galileo is well liked know, he wasn't back then in his time. By saying that the sun was at the center of the universe, the church and others believed it was heresy. He was sentenced with house arrest for the rest of his life. In his house he still continued to make observations about the phases and Jupiter's moons. He published a book about his observations which soon became known world wide. He later died under house arrest in 1642.
Craters of the Moon
Galileo first observed the moon when he improved his telescope in 1610. When he saw the moon he noticed that the moon had craters and wasn't completely smooth. It disagreed with Aristotle and the Church's sayings that everything that God created was perfect. What Galileo proved and saw came to disagree with both of them.
Jupiter's Moons

Discovering Jupiter's moons was another big discovery for Galileo. Galileo discovered Jupiter's moons on March 22, 1610 and named them after the Medici Family so he could be become famous/ more popular with them. This idea also disagreed with Aristotle because it proved that not everything orbits Earth. Also that they can orbit other objects, while orbitting aanother.
Saturn's Rings
When Galileo first saw Saturn's rings he thought they were ears. Later on he believed that they were forming a three bodied system. Now and then Galileo would observe Staurn and make observations about its mysterious rings. Every now and then he would see them appear and disappear. After awhile he got confused about why it appeared and disappeared, so he soon gave up.
Sunspots on the Moon
Another discovery of Galileo is the sunspots on the moon. This discovery was also one of many that proved Aristotle's ideas wrong. The sunpsots on the Sun is just another proof that God didn't make everything as perfect as everyone believed. No one tried to see/believe in his ideas because they thought they were insulting the heavens.
Venus has Phases
One of the many discoveries of Galileo was that he discovered that Venus has phases. Galileo discovered that Venus went through phases just like our moon in 1610, when he discovered most of his other discoveries. People who agreed with most of Aristotle's ideas believed that Venu s did go through phases as well but the only difference was that Venus takes a year and half to go through its complete set of phases. This meant that it had to a whole lot larger than what Aristotle thought. This discovery also proved that Aristotle was wrong, because at one point in the phase orbit, Venus is on the opposite side of the Sun looking as if it was a round circle. Also, when Venus is in between the Earth and Sun we can't see it at all.
